I had the opportunity to attend the First-Generation Center’s “For the Love of First-Gen” event at ARC Cove. It was a powerful celebration of resilience, pride, and community, and I was inspired by the meaningful connections and stories shared by fellow students.
The event created a welcoming space for students to share what being first-generation means to them. One student said, “Being first-gen means showing my siblings that college is possible for us too it’s about opening doors my family never had.” Another shared, “I’m proud of the sacrifices my parents made for me to be here, and this event reminds me why I push forward every day.”
Hearing these stories made me realize how much courage and determination my peers carry in their educational journeys.
What stood out most to me was the sense of unity. Conversations flowed naturally, and there was a genuine feeling of support in the room. One participant noted, “It’s comforting to be around people who understand the struggles and triumphs of being first-gen.” The atmosphere was both celebratory and empowering a reminder that being first-generation is not just a challenge, but a strength.
The First-Generation Center (FGC), located in C1321, continues to support students through peer mentorship, academic workshops, and access to campus resources. Attending this event helped me see the impact of the center’s work firsthand, and it motivated me to take advantage of programs designed to support first-gen students throughout the semester.

Overall, “For the Love of First-Gen” gave me a deeper appreciation for the first-generation community at Governors State University. Every student carries a unique story of perseverance, and events like this remind us that our journeys matter not just for ourselves, but for those who follow.
