Coming to the United States was never just a dream — it was a turning point in my life, shaped by hope, courage, and the desire to build a stable career after many years of personal responsibility and sacrifice.
I was born and raised in India, where I earned my Bachelor’s degree in Electronics and Communication Engineering and a Masters in Business Administration. I worked in different companies, built my experience, got married, and became a mother of two wonderful children.
Like many women, family became my priority, and somewhere along the way, my professional journey paused. With my family’s support, I continued working from home for a while as a consultant during the COVID pandemic, but deep down, I knew I wanted more. I wanted stability, growth, and a chance to rediscover myself.
That desire pushed me to consider studying abroad a decision filled with excitement but also challenges. I began preparing for various exams, spending money, time, and energy, hoping to get a good score and a better future. My first F1 U.S. visa application was rejected in Chennai, and it felt like everything was falling apart. But I didn’t give up. With renewed determination, I applied again, and finally, on Aug. 24, 2023 in Mumbai, my visa was approved. It was one of the happiest and most emotional moments of my life.
On Dec. 17, 2023, I arrived at Chicago O’Hare International Airport. The cold weather shocked me, but the warm welcome from my friend made everything feel possible. Life in the U.S. was completely different: new food, new people, new culture, and new challenges. Managing everything alone while being far from my family and kids was the hardest part, but I kept moving forward.
Soon, I began my academic journey at Governors State University, a place that became my second home. I met friends who turned into family, shared memories, supported each other, and together, we survived assignments, exams, stress, and long nights.
My biggest surprise came in Fall 2024, when I was selected as a Teaching Assistant in the Math Department. It felt unreal a proud moment that I will always cherish. Helping undergraduate students, assisting professors, and being part of the academic environment gave me confidence and joy I had never felt before.
I successfully completed my first and second semesters with dedication, hard work, and the constant encouragement of my friends. My third semester passed quickly, filled with campus events, learning, and experiences that shaped me both personally and professionally.
During the summer break, I attended campus career placements and applied for a position with the Phoenix as a Staff Writer. I didn’t expect much but I was selected. That moment felt magical. It was a great opportunity.
I finally got the chance to write my own story
Thanks to Lara, my supervisor, for believing in me; to Randall Weissman, who always helped me improve my writing; and to Julie Keck ,Director, Center for Community Media for giving me this beautiful opportunity. Without Jaguar Student Media, I would not have been able to explore this side of myself.
As I now step into my final semester, I carry gratitude, memories, friendships, and lessons that will stay with me forever. My journey wasn’t easy but every struggle made me stronger. Every rejection led to a better opportunity. Every moment of doubt pushed me towards growth.
This is not just a story of an international student. This is the story of a mother, a dreamer, a fighter — who crossed oceans to rebuild my life.
Today, I stand proud, thankful, and hopeful for the future.
