Governors State University students gathered virtually for a professional development workshop focused on resume writing and job search preparation, led by Career Counselor Jim Bowlds.
The workshop provided students with practical strategies for building effective resumes and preparing for internships, career fairs and future employment opportunities. Throughout the session, Bowlds explained how students can strengthen their resumes by organizing sections clearly, using professional action words and highlighting relevant education and experience.
Presentation slides discussed several important resume-writing topics, including contact information, education formatting, objective statements and professional wording. Students were encouraged to place their strongest qualifications near the top of the resume and tailor resumes toward specific career goals.
Bowlds also emphasized the importance of concise formatting and readability during the presentation.
“The resume should stimulate interest, not overwhelm with information,” Bowlds shared while discussing the importance of keeping resumes professional and organized.
Students attending the session participated virtually through Zoom and engaged with the presentation focused on career readiness and workforce preparation.
One participant, Michelle Gonzalez, shared: “The workshop helped me better understand how to organize my resume and make it more professional for employers.”
Another participant, Allah Nichols, shared: “I learned that small details on a resume can make a big difference when applying for jobs and internships.”
The workshop is part of Governors State University’s continued efforts to support students in career development, professional communication and employment preparation.
