Students at Governors State University will have the opportunity to take center stage and share personal stories at the 6th Annual First Voice Story Slam, scheduled for Thursday, April 16, in the Lakeside Lounge.
Hosted by the university’s Center for Community Media, the event invites students to present five-minute stories centered on this year’s theme, “Small Acts of Kindness.” The Story Slam will run from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., offering both participants and audience members a chance to engage in a creative and community-driven experience.
The event is organized by Julie Keck, director of the Center for Community Media and visiting assistant professor of practice, who encouraged students from across campus to participate whether as storytellers or supporters.
Open to all Governors State students, the competition will feature performances evaluated by a panel of student judges. The top six finalists will receive one-on-one coaching from a professional storyteller and advance to the First Voice Grand Slam, set for April 27 from 4 to 6 p.m.
In addition to the opportunity for mentorship and public performance, finalists will compete for cash prizes, with the top award reaching up to $250.
The event also aims to foster connection and creativity among students. Organizers emphasize that participants do not need prior storytelling experience, only a willingness to share meaningful moments tied to the theme. Attendees who prefer to listen can enjoy the event as audience members while supporting their peers.
To encourage attendance, free pizza will be provided during the event.
Students interested in participating or attending can sign up using a QR code provided on event flyers or through an online registration link. Organizers have also shared storytelling tips to help participants prepare their narratives.
With its focus on personal expression and community engagement, the First Voice Story Slam continues to serve as a platform for student voices, highlighting the power of storytelling in bringing people together.
