Governors State University hosted a healthcare speaker event titled “Navigating the Healthcare Landscape and Leadership for the Future” on April 2, bringing together students, faculty and healthcare professionals to explore emerging trends and leadership in the industry.
Organized by the Student Healthcare Management Association (SHCMA) in collaboration with the Department of Health Administration and Informatics, the event took place in the F-1622 Lecture Hall and focused on providing students with real-world insights into healthcare challenges and career pathways.
The session featured three distinguished speakers representing diverse areas of the healthcare field. Dr. Phillip Kambic, chief executive officer of Riverside Healthcare, shared perspectives on leadership and managing complex healthcare systems. Jennifer W. Weiss, ACHE (American College of Healthcare Executives) regent and Governors State University Master of Health Administration alumna, discussed professional growth and leadership development. Akhilesh Duratkar, senior clinical analyst at the Illinois College of Optometry and a GovState MHA (Master of Health Administration) alumnus, highlighted the role of clinical analytics, workforce development and the growing impact of artificial intelligence in healthcare.
Duratkar emphasized the importance of adapting to technological advancements, noting that artificial intelligence is playing an increasingly critical role in improving efficiency and decision-making across healthcare systems.
Students actively engaged with the discussion, recognizing the value of connecting academic learning with industry experience. One participant, Surya Sri Asha Rudraraju, vice president of SHCMA, shared: “This event is a great opportunity for students to gain real-world insights and understand the leadership skills required to succeed in today’s evolving healthcare industry.”
Shivani Talloju, a member of SHCMA, added: “We wanted to create a platform where students can interact with experienced professionals, learn from their journeys, and build connections that will support their future careers.”
The event was supported by SHCMA advisor Ali Demirbas, who continues to guide student engagement and professional development initiatives within the organization.
The discussion highlighted the importance of workforce readiness, leadership adaptability and the integration of emerging technologies, such as artificial intelligence, in shaping the future of healthcare. As the industry continues to evolve, events like this reinforce the need to prepare the next generation of professionals with the knowledge, skills and connections required to lead in a rapidly changing environment.
