While spring break is often seen as a time to relax and travel, one group of students chose to spend their week giving back, participating in an Alternative Spring Break trip to San Diego from March 16 to 20.
What started as a short trip quickly turned into a meaningful experience shaped by service, teamwork and reflection.
On the first day, students visited Millennium Tech School, where they helped reorganize inventory and clean up storage spaces. Though the work seemed simple, students said it felt rewarding to know their efforts would make a difference in the school’s day-to-day functioning.
The following day brought a more personal experience at Father Joe’s Villages. There, students helped serve breakfast and lunch to individuals experiencing homelessness. Beyond just serving meals, many found themselves connecting with people and gaining a deeper understanding of the challenges others face.
On the third day, the group continued volunteering at Network Volunteers, helping serve breakfast once again. They also took part in a small agriculture activity, where they dug soil and set up mesh for planting. For many students, it was their first time doing hands-on work like this, adding a new layer to the experience.
Outside of volunteering, the group explored Old Town San Diego, learning about the city’s roots and history, and visited Balboa Park, where they experienced its vibrant cultural atmosphere.
By Thursday night, the group gathered for a team dinner, sharing stories, laughter and reflections from the week. What began as a group of individuals had grown into a close-knit team bonded by shared experiences.
Students returned home Friday not just with memories, but with a new perspective.
