Governors State’s Marvel Rivals squad dropped a tough four-map series to Illinois State University in the first round of the NECC Division 4 playoffs this week, falling 1–3 after a competitive showing that had the Jaguars in position to advance before ISU pulled away in the final two maps. Despite the loss, GovState remains alive in the ECAC playoffs, earning the 8th seed with a 4–3 regular-season record.
The Jaguars entered the match as the 3rd seed in NECC Division 4 following a strong 5–2 regular season, and they made a statement on the first map. Running Magneto, Doctor Strange, Gambit, Phoenix, Invisible Woman, and Elsa on Domination, GovState found a winning formula early by chaining a Strange ultimate into a Magneto ultimate to seize control of the first point and take round one. The second round was messier. ISU pushed the score to roughly 60% before the Jaguars wrestled the point back, nearly ran it to 99%, and then lost it in a chaotic exchange. A Gambit ultimate helped fuel one of the late fights, but a missed Magneto ultimate proved costly heading into the deciding round. GovState steadied themselves when it mattered most, executing a clean final round to clutch the map and take a 1–0 series lead.
Map two, being a convergence game, swung the momentum. With a lineup of Magneto, Luna Snow, Star-Lord, Moon Knight, Invisible Woman, and Luna Snow, the Jaguars lost the defensive round quickly but came out aggressively on offense. A Magneto and Luna Snow ultimate combination broke through the first choke point, and a well-timed Star-Lord ultimate cleared the path to the first checkpoint with about 30 seconds left. The push to the final point was one of the better sequences of the series, generating solid overtime play. But when the Jaguars needed to convert on offense in the critical overtime period, they couldn’t get it done, and ISU closed it out to level the series at 1–1.
The third map, Convoy, started with GovState on defense behind a lineup featuring Peni Parker, Invisible Woman, Mantis, Hulk, Doctor Strange, and Gambit. An early Groot ultimate from ISU wiped the team and handed the opposition a meaningful lead. The Jaguars adjusted mid-map, rotating to a Deadpool tank and adding Star-Lord, and answered an ISU Gambit ultimate with one of their own to maintain parity. A Moon Knight ultimate helped create space and stabilize the defensive hold, and Govstate actually stopped the payload near the end of the first half with a strong defensive stand. On offense, early ult usage pushed the team deep into the second point, but the momentum stalled in the final stretch, and ISU took the map to go up 2–1.
Facing elimination on map four, another game of domination, with Deadpool, Punisher, Doctor Strange, Winter Soldier, Cloak and Dagger, and Gambit, the Jaguars built an early lead on the first point before ISU pushed them off it and maintained it to take the first point. The second point was where the match’s most dramatic moment unfolded: ISU pushed the score to 99% before Governors State was able to gain control of the point at all. A heroic hold by Deadpool gave the team enough time for Doctor Strange to set up a portal and establish a final fighting position, as the Jaguars retook the point, raising their percentage to around 50%. But ISU won the last fight, closed out the point, and took the map and the series 3–1.
It’s a tough exit from the NECC bracket, but the Jaguars have more to play for. GovState’s Marvel Rivals team is still alive in the ECAC playoffs, where they head in as the 8th seed following a 4–3 regular season. Their next match is scheduled for Wednesday, April 1st @7pm? And with the experience of a full playoff series now under their belt this season, the Jaguars will look to make a run in the ECAC playoffs.
