Governors State men’s volleyball put together one of its best stretches of the season this week, grinding out consecutive five-set road wins over Judson (IL) and Olivet Nazarene (IL) to improve to 13-9 overall and 7-1 in conference play.
The Jaguars opened the week on Monday at Judson, taking the match 25–18, 21–25, 24–26, 25–21, 15–13 in a back-and-forth contest that saw Governors State drop two tight middle sets before closing strong in the fourth and fifth sets. Two nights later, on Wednesday, it was more of the same at Olivet Nazarene. GovState won 25–21, 23–25, 16–25, 25–22, 15–12, again rallying after a dominant third set by the opposition to take the final two frames and secure the victory.
Diego Antunez was the most consistent performer across both matches, totaling 40 kills, 21 digs, and 45.0 combined points over ten sets of play. Daniel Lopez was right there with him, posting 36 kills across the two matches while hitting .262 or better in each and adding 18 digs and two aces. Pablo Pascual contributed 19 kills and 14 digs in the Judson win, while Ean Schultz brought physicality at the net in both outings, going error-free on multiple occasions and racking up eight block assists between the two matches. Thiago Neves added six combined block assists as well, giving the Jaguars a consistent presence up front all week.
In the back row, Jared Byas was dependable on both nights, totaling 38 digs across the two matches at libero. Elias Stommel and Lucas Lapa split setting duties, combining for 95 assists and helping the offense flow through some difficult stretches.
Two five-set road wins in the same week speaks to the depth and mental toughness this group has built over the course of the season.
