The Governors State men’s indoor track and field team turned in a strong showing at the CCAC Conference Championships hosted at Olivet Nazarene University, finishing tied for fourth place with 54 points after two days of competition.
Leading the Jaguars was Daniel Zavala, who captured a conference title in the men’s 5000 meters with a winning time of 15:12.30. Zavala’s performance earned valuable points for Governors State and highlighted a strong distance effort for the program.
Also contributing in the same event was Samuel Rocio, who placed third in the 5000 meters to give the Jaguars two podium finishes in the race.
In the field events, Steven Sesson delivered another standout moment for GovState, winning the men’s high jump with a clearance of 2.01 meters to secure another conference championship for the Jaguars.
Clark Fremouw added to the team’s scoring with a third-place finish in the shot put, rounding out a productive weekend in the field events.
Overall, the Jaguars’ performances across distance races and field events helped the program secure a tie for fourth place in the team standings in a competitive conference meet.
Next up, Governors State will send athletes to compete at the NAIA Indoor Track & Field National Championships in Gainesville, Florida, a three-day event beginning March 5. The Jaguars’ women’s team will also be represented at the national meet as both programs look to continue their seasons on the national stage.
