Governors State men’s basketball is peaking at the right time.
The Jaguars closed the regular season on a strong note, winning three straight and improving to 20–8 overall (16–4 CCAC) heading into the conference tournament. With balanced scoring, high-efficiency shooting, and improved defensive pressure, GovState looks locked in as postseason play begins.
Governors State 71, Trinity Christian (IL) 69
The Jaguars battled back from a 42-37 halftime deficit to edge Trinity Christian in a tight 71–69 victory.
Governors State shot an impressive 51.8% from the field, matching Trinity’s efficiency, but made key plays late to secure the win. Javon Johnson led the way with 17 points, while Isaiah Tolbert and Javonte McKenzie each added 15.
Tolbert filled the stat sheet with seven assists and six rebounds, and the Jaguars finished with 20 assists as a team, showing strong ball movement in the second half. After trailing at the break, GovState outscored Trinity 34–27 over the final 20 minutes to complete the comeback.
Governors State 89, St. Ambrose (IA) 76
The Jaguars followed up with one of their most complete offensive performances of the season, shooting 57.9% from the field in a 13-point win.
Vincent Mayes was dominant, pouring in 26 points on 9-of-11 shooting while adding five blocks defensively. Maxwell Marius contributed 20 points, and Tolbert orchestrated the offense with an impressive 12 assists.
Governors State jumped out early with 53 first-half points and maintained control throughout. The combination of inside scoring, perimeter efficiency, and defensive rim protection proved too much for St. Ambrose to overcome.
Governors State 107, Judson (IL) 55
The Jaguars capped the regular season in emphatic fashion, eclipsing the century mark in a dominant 107–55 road win.
GovState shot a blistering 59.2% from the field and 56.3% from three, while forcing 18 turnovers and turning defense into offense. The Jaguars had six players in double figures, led by Trae Warren’s 26 points off the bench, including four three-pointers.
McKenzie added 13 points and 10 rebounds, Marius chipped in 13, and Mayes added 13 with four blocks. The team recorded 27 assists on 42 made field goals, showcasing unselfish play and depth across the lineup.
Looking Ahead
Governors State now turns its focus to the CCAC Postseason Tournament Quarterfinals, hosting Indiana Northwest on Wednesday, Feb. 25 at 7 p.m. at the GovState ARC.
With three straight wins, offensive efficiency above 57% in back-to-back games, and strong bench production, the Jaguars enter tournament play with confidence and momentum. If this late-season surge is any indication, GovState is ready to make a serious postseason run.
