Governors State women’s basketball closed out the regular season with a mix of adversity and opportunity, earning a forfeit win before battling one of the top teams in the conference. Now, the Jaguars turn their attention to postseason play with the CCAC Tournament up next.
Governors State vs. Trinity Christian (IL) Result: Forfeit Win
The Jaguars picked up a forfeit victory at home against Trinity Christian, officially adding to their win column and maintaining momentum heading into the final stretch of the regular season. While the game didn’t tip off, the result kept Governors State focused and positioned for postseason play.
Indiana South Bend (IN) 56, Governors State 47
GovState closed the regular season against a strong Indiana South Bend squad (21–7, 16–4 CCAC) and fought back after a slow start before ultimately falling 56–47.
The Jaguars found themselves down early after scoring just 15 points in the first half, but responded with energy coming out of the locker room. GSU outscored the Titans 21 – 17 in the third quarter, showing improved ball movement and defensive intensity that helped shift momentum.
Tenleigh Phelps led the way with a game-high 23 points, knocking down four three-pointers and adding seven rebounds in a full 40-minute effort. Davina Smith added 17 points, continuing to provide a steady offensive presence, while Cencere McDaniel battled inside for 12 points and 11 rebounds to record a double-double.
Governors State finished with 40 rebounds and forced key defensive stops late, but the early deficit proved difficult to overcome against one of the conference’s top teams.
Looking Ahead
Governors State (18–10, 13–7 CCAC) now shifts focus to the postseason, traveling to Saint Xavier (IL) on Tuesday, Feb. 24 at 5 p.m. for the CCAC Conference Quarterfinal.
With postseason stakes on the line, the Jaguars will look to lean on their scoring balance and defensive rebounding as they aim to extend their season. If their second-half resilience against Indiana South Bend is any indication, this group is ready for the moment.
