The Governors State men’s volleyball team continues to trend in the right direction, turning a challenging road weekend into the spark for one of its best stretches of the season. The Jaguars have won three of their last four matches, improving to 6–7 overall, and they are starting to look like a team hitting its stride at the right time.
Bethel (IN) 3, Governors State 0
Set Scores: 33–31, 25–19, 27–25
Governors State opened the Kentucky weekend by pushing unbeaten Bethel to the brink in the first set before falling in straight sets. The Jaguars traded blows early and nearly stole the opener, dropping a marathon first set 33–31 behind 14 kills from Daniel Lopez and 14 from Pablo Pascual. GSU hit .486 in that opening frame, showing how explosive the offense can be when it finds rhythm.
Despite the loss, the Jaguars proved they could compete with one of the top teams on the schedule, keeping pressure on serve and staying within striking distance late in both the first and third sets.
Campbellsville (KY) 3, Governors State 0
Set Scores: 25–20, 25–22, 25–14
Facing another unbeaten opponent the next day, the Jaguars battled but couldn’t quite close the gap. GSU showed efficiency early, hitting .385 in the first set and .290 in the second, but Campbellsville capitalized late in key moments.
Daniel Lopez and Pablo Pascual again paced the offense, while Lucas Lapa continued directing the attack with confidence. Though the result didn’t fall their way, the competitiveness against two undefeated programs highlighted the team’s growth.
Governors State 3, Brescia 1
Set Scores: 23–25, 25–20, 25–20, 25–18
The Jaguars flipped the script later that day, bouncing back with authority against Brescia. After dropping a tight opening set, GSU tightened up defensively and took control of the match.
Diego Antunez delivered 15 kills, while Pablo Pascual added 13 and hit .333. The turning point came in sets three and four, where Governors State combined for just six errors and hit over .340 to pull away. The response showed resilience, a team refusing to let a tough start define the weekend.
Governors State 3, Indiana East 0
Set Scores: 25–16, 25–20, 25–16
Back home, the Jaguars carried that momentum forward with a decisive sweep of Indiana East. GovState hit .309 as a team and controlled the match from start to finish.
Pablo Pascual led the way with nine kills on a .438 clip, while the Jaguars held Indiana East to just .128 hitting. The balance across the lineup and steady serve pressure made it difficult for the visitors to settle into rhythm.
Governors State 3, Olivet Nazarene (IL) 0
Set Scores: 25–14, 25–18, 25–21
The roll continued as Governors State earned its first conference win of the season with another sweep. The Jaguars totaled 40 kills and hit .281 as a team.
Diego Antunez was nearly flawless with 13 kills and no errors (.500), while Pablo Pascual added 13 of his own. Jared Byas anchored the defense with 17 digs and four aces, helping GSU dictate tempo from the service line. The Jaguars never trailed for long stretches and controlled all three sets with poise.
Governors State 3, Culver-Stockton (MO) 1
Set Scores: 25–17, 25–20, 23–25, 25–11
Governors State capped the week with one of its strongest offensive performances of the season. The Jaguars recorded 66 kills and hit .336 overall, including a blistering .516 clip in the fourth set to close the match emphatically.
Pablo Pascual erupted for 20 kills, while Diego Antunez added 17 on .419 hitting. GSU outpaced Culver-Stockton in nearly every category and showed depth, balance, and confidence as the match wore on.
Looking Ahead
Governors State will look to keep the momentum going on Feb. 26 at Davenport University. With three wins in their last four matches and the offense clicking at over .300 in multiple outings, the Jaguars appear to be settling into form.
If the recent stretch is any indication, this group is gaining confidence, and they’ll aim to carry that edge into the next road test as they continue building toward the heart of the season.
