On Feb. 9, Governors State University hosted an informative session on the Public Health Brigades Ghana Study Abroad Program, providing students with an overview of the upcoming Summer 2026 global service learning experience focused on public health, leadership, and cultural engagement.
During the event, students learned about the program’s hands on opportunities, including teaching local communities in Ghana about basic health procedures, vaccinations, and nutrition. Participants also will assist with public health initiatives, work alongside coordinators and translators, and immerse themselves in Ghanaian culture through site visits and community activities. The session highlighted how this combination of service and cultural engagement prepares students for leadership roles in public health and global service initiatives.
The program costs, scholarships, and key preparation steps were also discussed. Students were informed that the total program cost is $4,500, with payment plans available, and that scholarships such as Leadership Grants, the Dr. Phyllis West Global Service Learning Scholarship, and the OIS Study Abroad Scholarship can help offset expenses. Event attendees were encouraged to apply for passports, submit visa documents, complete vaccinations, and participate in pre-departure orientations in preparation for the program launch.
Overall, the event provided a comprehensive overview for students interested in global public health service and leadership development, emphasizing the meaningful impact participants will make in Ghana while gaining invaluable cross cultural experience.
Students interested in global public health and service-learning initiatives are encouraged to watch for upcoming workshops, scholarship guidance sessions, and pre-departure orientations. These events will help students prepare for study abroad programs, connect with faculty mentors, and explore ways to make a positive impact locally and internationally.
