Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. hosted a Diamond Painting Night on Feb. 17 in the Hall of Honors in Building D, giving Governors State University students a creative space to celebrate Black History Month while taking a break from mid-semester stress.
The event combined art, culture and community, as students created Black-history-inspired diamond paintings highlighting influential figures, key movements and defining moments in the Black experience.
The atmosphere inside the Hall of Honors was both lively and relaxed. Soft music played in the background while tables were covered with colorful diamonds and art supplies. Students worked in small groups, talking and encouraging one another as they carefully placed each piece to complete their designs.
“I love how this event gives me a chance to take a break from my assignments and just focus on something creative. It’s so relaxing and inspiring,” said Yashswini Racha.
Another attendee said participating in a Black History-themed activity helped them feel more connected to culture and history.
“Making something with my own hands was so rewarding,” the student said.
Organizers also added small touches, including bracelets and bookmarks, to make the evening feel welcoming.
“The gifts and little surprises were such a thoughtful touch. It really made the night feel special,” one guest said.
For many students, the event offered more than just a craft.
“I came to de-stress, but I also left learning something new,” said Stephanie, who asked that her last name not be used. “Events like this are exactly what we need on campus to feel a sense of community.”
Attendees were encouraged to wear African-inspired attire, adding to the celebration of heritage. The evening also included vision board activities, giving students a chance to reflect on personal goals and future aspirations.
The event was organized by Sigma Gamma Rho members Mechelle Washington, Stephanie and Pointer, who did not want their last names published.
Sigma Gamma Rho plans to host additional campus events this semester, including a karaoke night and an ice cream social, aimed at continuing to provide students with opportunities for relaxation, creativity and connection.
