As midterms and major projects start piling up, many students at Governors State University may not realize just how much free academic support is available to them in one place.
The Academic Resource Center serves as a hub for tutoring, writing assistance, disability services and retention coaching — all designed to help students stay on track and succeed.
Alyssa Voss, a Governors State student who also works in the Academic Resource Center, said many students are surprised by the range of services offered.
“We have our Student Disability Services here for students that want to establish eligibility for accommodations,” Voss said. “And we also have our retention coaches here for students that need help with their classes or are on academic probation.”
Voss explained that while the Academic Resource Center remains the main point of contact, in-person tutoring appointments are now held in the university library.
“Recently, the in-person appointments for tutoring are going to be held in the library,” she said. “But students can still come into the Academic Resource Center if they have questions about making an appointment or anything like that.”
Students looking for writing help can schedule appointments online through the university website.
“When you go on to the Write Center page on the Governors State website, it shows you the link that brings you to the scheduling website where you can see the available times,” Voss said.
Appointments allow students to select a time that fits their schedule and connect with a tutor for one-on-one support.
In addition to tutoring and writing assistance, the Academic Resource Center works closely with students who may be struggling academically.
Retention coaches meet with students to discuss study strategies, time management and course planning. These services are especially helpful for students who are on academic probation or simply feeling overwhelmed.
Student Disability Services also assists students in establishing accommodations, ensuring equal access to coursework and exams.
Voss encouraged students not to wait until they are in crisis to seek help.
“A lot of students don’t realize these resources are here for them,” she said. “We’re here to support you before things become too stressful.”
Students can visit the Academic Resource Center during business hours for questions about services, appointment scheduling or eligibility for accommodations. Tutoring sessions can be booked online through the Write Center page on the university website. https://govst.mywconline.com/
Whether you need help polishing a paper, understanding course material or getting back on track academically, the Academic Resource Center is designed to be a first stop for support.
For Governors State students balancing coursework, jobs and campus involvement, taking advantage of these free resources can make a significant difference — and according to Voss, the staff is ready to help.
