Over the course of a long season, every team faces moments that test its resolve. For Governors State, last week delivered both sides of that reality, a tough road loss followed by a determined bounce-back performance that reaffirmed the Jaguars’ identity as one of the conference’s most resilient group.
St. Francis (IL) 86, Governors State 70
Facing a fellow contender tied in the standings, Governors State battled early but struggled to keep pace with a hot-shooting St. Francis squad that built separation late in the first half and never relinquished control.
The Jaguars kept things competitive behind efficient scoring from Maxwell Marius, who led the way with 20 points on 7-of-13 shooting while converting all six free-throw attempts. Isaiah Tolbert added 15 points and five rebounds, while Javonte McKenzie contributed 13 points in an active offensive effort.
Despite shooting over 41 percent from the field and knocking down 17 free throws, Governors State found it difficult to slow St. Francis’ balanced attack. The hosts shot 46 percent overall and nearly 90 percent from the line, consistently capitalizing on opportunities to extend their lead. A 40-point first half by St. Francis put the Jaguars in catch-up mode, and though GSU matched the offensive output in stretches after halftime, the deficit proved too much to overcome.
The loss moved Governors State to 16-8 overall and 12-4 in conference play.
Governors State 89, Calumet (IN) 79
The response came swiftly, just two days later.
On the road at Calumet, Governors State delivered one of its most complete offensive performances of the season, using efficiency at the free-throw line and physical play inside to secure a 10-point victory.
Vincent Mayes turned in a dominant outing, finishing a perfect 9-for-9 from the field and 7-for-7 at the line on his way to a game-high 25 points while adding nine rebounds and three blocks. His presence in the paint set the tone early and gave the Jaguars a reliable scoring option throughout the night.
Marius followed with 22 points, including an impressive 16-of-18 performance from the free-throw line, consistently attacking the basket and drawing contact. McKenzie added 17 points and a team-high 11 rebounds for a double-double, while Tolbert contributed across the board with six assists, five rebounds, and strong defensive activity.
Governors State built a lead before halftime and maintained control through the second half, forcing turnovers and converting at the line. The Jaguars finished with 38 made free throws and 15 assists as a team, showing both patience and composure down the stretch.
The win pushed GSU to 17-8 overall and 13-4 in conference play, keeping them firmly in the hunt as the regular season enters its final stretch.
