University Park, Ill. The Governors State women’s basketball team experienced both ends of the spectrum this past week, opening with a commanding road victory before running into a tough conference challenge at home. Through it all, the Jaguars continued to show the defensive intensity and balanced scoring that has defined their season.
February 7 — Governors State 69, Calumet (IN) 35
Governors State delivered one of its most complete performances of the year, controlling the game from the opening tip and never allowing Calumet to find offensive rhythm.
The Jaguars set the tone early with a 21-point first quarter and continued to build separation throughout the afternoon, holding Calumet to just 25 percent shooting and forcing 24 turnovers. Governors State’s defensive pressure translated into offense, as the Jaguars recorded 17 steals and consistently created transition opportunities.
Cencere McDaniel led all scorers with 25 points, adding eight rebounds, four assists, and four steals in a strong all-around performance. Gabrielle McClain contributed 14 points and six rebounds, while Davina Smith added eight points and four boards. Journae Cotton and Kalvina Eubanks provided defensive energy, combining for three blocks as GSU controlled the paint.
Governors State finished with a 39-40 rebounding effort and 13 assists, maintaining control in every quarter on the way to the 34-point victory.
February 11 — Viterbo 74, Governors State 56
Back home at the ARC, the Jaguars faced a difficult matchup against Viterbo, as the visitors used consistent scoring and strong second-half execution to pull away.
Governors State battled throughout the opening half but struggled to sustain offensive momentum against Viterbo’s defensive pressure. Despite defensive efforts and stretches of strong play, the Jaguars were unable to close the gap as the game progressed.
The loss moved Governors State to 16-10 overall and 11-7 in conference play as the team turns its focus toward the final stretch of the regular season.
