Governors State University’s Counseling and Wellness Center is going to be hosting the Bridging Futures Symposium: Building Pathways to Healing and Belonging — Reclaiming Your Power to Transform Spaces, Systems, and Self on Friday, Feb. 27, 2026, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Participants can attend in person on campus or virtually.
The symposium will bring together educators, social workers, policymakers, students experiencing homelessness, and people with lived experience for a day focused on breaking down barriers and building better support systems. Conversations will center on the challenges that keep people from accessing stable resources and care, while also highlighting programs that work, opportunities for policy improvement, and ways community partners can collaborate more effectively. Organizers say attendees can expect practical strategies, meaningful discussion, and chances to connect with professionals and advocates doing this work every day.
The keynote speaker for the event is Gaelin Elmore, a former NFL athlete, author, and nationally recognized speaker who is known for his work on belonging, leadership, and organizational culture. Elmore played college football at the University of Minnesota and East Carolina University before signing with the Cincinnati Bengals in 2018. Elmore’s post-football career has been built around helping schools, workplaces, and organizations create environments where people feel supported. His talks often blend storytelling with real, usable takeaways—especially around resilience, identity, and what it takes to build spaces where people can thrive.
The symposium will provide a continental breakfast and lunch. The event is free, includes CEUs, and is open to both in-person and virtual participants.
The Bridging Futures Symposium is presented in partnership with Chicago State University, The Village Project, Y-CAP, and the University of Illinois School of Social Work, reflecting GovState’s continued commitment to community engagement, social equity, and professional development.
