Hosted by Governors State University in collaboration with the Kaleidoscope Community Service Council and Versiti Blood Center of Illinois, the blood drive took place Wednesday, Feb. 11, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Engbretson Hall. Volunteers from Versiti guided donors through each step of the process, answering questions and helping first-time donors feel at ease.
Walk-in donors were welcomed throughout the day, allowing students and employees to participate between classes and work commitments. While appointments were encouraged, they were not required, a flexibility that helped increase participation. Each donor was asked to present a government-issued photo ID, and participants received a $15 Chick-fil-A gift card as a thank-you.
According to Versiti, someone in the United States needs blood every two seconds, and a single donation can help save up to three lives. With a campus goal of 29 donors, the event emphasized the importance of collective action and shared responsibility. Each donation contributed not only blood, but hope to patients across Illinois who rely on these critical resources.
The Unity in Action Blood Drive reflects GovStateās ongoing commitment to community service, public health and student-led initiatives. It demonstrated that meaningful engagement does not always require grand gesturesĀ sometimes, it simply requires showing up.
As donors exited Engbretson Hall with bandages on their arms and gift cards in hand, the true reward was less visible but far more meaningful: the knowledge that they had played a role in saving lives. Events like this continue to strengthen unity on campus and highlight the positive impact GovState can have beyond its walls.
