What started as a tight conference battle turned into a full-blown war of attrition on Wednesday night, Jan.26, as Governors State outlasted Olivet Nazarene 81–80 in a thrilling double-overtime showdown.
Both teams traded punches from the opening tip. Governors State carried a slim 28–26 lead into halftime. Olivet Nazarene responded with a strong second half behind Eli Edwards and Mason Wood, forcing overtime after the teams were deadlocked at 62 at the end of regulation. Neither side blinked in the first extra period, each scoring eight points, setting the stage for a second overtime that felt more like survival than strategy.
As legs grew heavy and every possession carried enormous weight, the Jaguars found themselves clinging to a 79–78 lead late in the second overtime. Olivet Nazarene had a chance to swing the game, attacking the rim on a layup attempt that could have flipped the score. Instead, Vincent Mayes rose up and delivered a massive block at the rim, one of the defining plays of the night.
Maxwell Marius secured the ball and fired an outlet pass ahead to Javonte McKenzie streaking up the floor. McKenzie pushed the pace and threaded a perfectly timed bounce pass into the paint to Javon Johnson, who immediately looked up and tossed a lob to Isaiah Tolbert for an uncontested layup that sent the Jaguar bench into a frenzy and pushed the lead to 81–78.
Olivet Nazarene refused to go quietly, trimming the deficit to 81–80 with roughly 40 seconds remaining, but the Governors State defense dug in one final time. The Jaguars forced a miss on the final possession and secured the rebound, sealing a hard-earned one-point victory in one of the most grueling games of the season.
Tolbert and Marius led the charge for GovState with 17 points and 22 points respectively, Marius playing a pivotal role on both ends of the court down the stretch. For Olivet Nazarene, Edwards posted a game-high 23 points, and Wood added 21 in a valiant effort.
In the end, this was more than just a box score or a one-point margin; it was a testament to resilience, execution, and heart. Double overtime. Defensive heroics. A perfectly executed fast break under pressure to seal the win. Games like this are why people fall in love with college basketball, and on this night, Governors State survived an instant classic, a legacy game that will help build a strong collegiate program.
