Governors State University has announced the launch of its 2026 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Writing Contest, centered on the theme “Honoring Our History — Fighting for Our Future.” Students and community members are invited to submit work in one of three categories: Poetry, Open Letter, or Academic Essay.
Poems may be up to two pages, while open letters and essays must be 400–800 words in MLA format. All entries must be submitted as Word-compatible files and include a cover page indicating whether the writer grants permission for the work to be printed at GovState’s annual MLK Breakfast.
Submissions are due by Thursday, Dec. 11, via email to [email protected]. Winners will be recognized at the MLK Breakfast on January 22, 2026, and will receive cash prizes of $250, $150, and $100 for first, second, and third place.
Organizers say the contest encourages reflection on Dr. King’s legacy and today’s fight for equity and justice.
