As the new academic year approaches, Governors State University is helping students take an important step toward funding their education by announcing that the 2026–2027 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is now open. The Office of Financial Aid & Scholarships has rolled out a series of hands-on workshops designed to guide students through the application process and ensure they receive the maximum financial support available.
The FAFSA is a crucial tool that determines eligibility for federal grants, student loans, work-study positions, and certain scholarships. To help students get started, the university encouraged everyone to complete the application as early as possible and to remember to include GSU’s school code: 009145.
Before beginning the FAFSA, students are advised to take several steps such as creating a StudentAid.gov account, gathering documents, and determining their dependency status. For dependent students, the “Who’s My FAFSA Parent?” tool can help identify whose information should be included. The university also noted that contributors—including parents or spouses—must create their own StudentAid.gov accounts, even if they do not have a Social Security number.
GovState also made an important reminder for Illinois residents who are undocumented: While federal aid may not be available, they may still qualify for state financial assistance through the Alternative Application for Illinois Financial Aid.
To support all students, the Office of Financial Aid & Scholarships is hosting multiple Financial Aid Application Workshops between November 2025 and February 2026. These sessions will take place at The Cube (D2430) or designated locations across campus. During each workshop, financial aid staff will be available in person to answer questions, review documents, and help students begin or complete their FAFSA or alternative application.
Select workshop dates also will offer Spanish-speaking assistance, ensuring accessibility for multilingual families and contributors.
The workshop schedule includes:
- Dec 9, 6–7 p.m. – The Cube
- Dec 12, 11 a.m. – noon – The Cube
- Dec 18, 3–4 p.m. – The Cube
