As the winter holiday season approaches, Governors State University’s Office of International Services (OIS) has issued important travel guidance for international students to ensure safe and smooth travel both within the United States and abroad.
OIS clarified recent confusion on campus regarding immigration status. The message emphasized that all F-1 international students who maintain active status are fully documented, supported by their SEVIS record, I-20, visa, passport, and I-94. This distinction was highlighted to help students feel confident and informed about their legal presence in the U.S. Undocumented students, by contrast, are those without a current immigration status.
With increased enforcement activity nationwide, OIS strongly encouraged international students traveling within the United States to carry essential immigration documents at all times: passport, F-1 visa, I-94, and current I-20 to avoid unnecessary delays if asked to verify their status.
For students planning to travel outside the U.S., OIS advised meeting with an immigration advisor before finalizing plans. Travel policies can change quickly, and speaking with staff through the OIS Portal or attending in-person sessions ensures each student receives updated, personalized guidance.
Before reentering the U.S., students must confirm that their I-20 includes a valid travel signature less than 12 months old for active students and less than 6 months old for OPT students. OIS encouraged students to contact an advisor before submitting a signature request to ensure all paperwork is correct.
Students also were reminded to review the ACLU’s “Know Your Rights: Immigrants Rights” resource to better understand their protections while living and traveling in the United States.
As the semester comes to a close, OIS extended warm holiday wishes and encouraged students to reach out with any questions or concerns. Whether traveling domestically or internationally, support is available through email, scheduled appointments, and walk-in/drop-in advising sessions.
