Governors State University hosted its third Town Hall Meeting on supporting non-citizen and international community on Dec. 4. The hybrid event was held in Sherman Hall and was streamed via Zoom. Students, faculty, staff, and community members engaged in an open discussion about creating an inclusive, supportive campus environment for international, non-citizen, and undocumented students.
University leaders and directors shared key insights, updates, and resources designed to strengthen campus climate and student engagement. among those participating were:
- Dr. Joyce Ester, President, emphasized the importance of utilizing the facilities and resources provided by the University to maximize every student’s experience.
- Dr. Beverly Schneller, Provost, addressed challenges including employment barriers, social issues, and trauma experienced by international and non-citizen students.
- Robert Morley, Director of International Services, discussed the opportunities and resources available for international students, emphasizing cultural programming, academic support, and professional development.
- Paul McGuinness, Vice President of Student Affairs and Enrollment Management, highlighted student activities and engagement programs that foster belonging and integration.
- Dr. Phyllis West shared insights about the University’s Social Justice Initiative and its role in promoting equity and inclusion.
- Dr. Kim Major-Ford discussed courses in Spanish and the support of language trainers to enhance learning opportunities for students.
- James R. McGee, Director of Public Safety/Chief of Police, spoke about campus safety, highlighting that safety is a shared responsibility among students, faculty, and staff.
- Josh Allen, Vice President of Human Resources, answered questions regarding H1B visa sponsorship and employment support for international students.
- Joi Patterson, PhD, actively engaged participants by encouraging students to ask questions and facilitating mentorship opportunities to clarify concerns.
- Emmanuel Lopez, Director of the Latinx Resource Center, reinforced the importance of utilizing available resources and staying informed about rights, protections, and campus support.
Many students attended the session and actively participated, asking questions and receiving clear, helpful answers from mentors and university leaders. Attendees also learned more about the RISE Act, Illinois immigration guidelines, and “Know Your Rights” resources available at www.govst.edu/undocumented.
The Town Hall highlighted GovState’s dedication to fostering an inclusive, safe, and empowering environment for all students. Through open dialogue, shared experiences, and collaborative problem-solving, the event strengthened the sense of community and reaffirmed the University’s commitment to supporting international, non-citizen, and undocumented students.
