GovState wrapped up its 2025 cross country campaign on the national stage, traveling to Apalachee Regional Park in Tallahassee, Florida, for the NAIA Championships. Against one of the deepest fields in the country and some of the fastest conditions of the season, both the men’s and women’s teams capped off their year with grit, steady pack running, and strong individual efforts that reflected how far each group has come.
Men’s Championship Recap
Running in a field of over 320 athletes, GovState’s men put together a determined showing in the 8K championship race. Senior Daniel Zavala led the Jaguars with a time of 26:12.7 in his final collegiate cross country race, closing strong in a massive national pack. He was joined by Samuel Rocio, who crossed in 27:01.0, giving GovState two athletes inside the top 250 in a championship that featured multiple nationally ranked programs.
Although GovState did not record a whole team score at nationals, the competitors represented the program with toughness on one of the most competitive courses in the country. Tallahassee’s long straights and rolling elevation highlighted the strength work put in all year, and the Jaguars rose to the occasion with a confident, composed effort on the sport’s biggest stage.
Women’s Championship Recap
In the women’s 6K championship, GovState placed 32nd overall, closing out the season with strong individual outings and promising future depth. Freshman standout Sophia Flowers continued her impressive first-year campaign by leading the Jaguars with a 22:56.7, placing her inside the top 110 at nationals.
Krysta Stanko followed closely with a 23:12.4, securing another top-135 finish and giving GovState a strong 1–2 punch up front. Senior Morgan Pieczynski clocked 24:28.6, finishing her cross country career with a steady performance, while Camila Mendez (24:53.1) and Yahaira Rodriguez (25:40.2) completed the scoring lineup. Sophie Hummitsch (25:57.4) and Sydney Bonham (26:31.8) added key displacement support.
The Jaguars finished with a team total of 788 points, averaging 24:14 per runner, and battled through a field stacked with perennial national powers. It was a performance that reflected both the team’s consistency across the season and the internal growth of a roster blending senior leadership with emerging new contributors.
Across both teams, GovState’s appearance on the national stage was a well-earned finale to a season marked by steady improvement, breakthrough individual performances, and a commitment to racing with discipline from start to finish. Competing in Tallahassee, a championship host known for fast surfaces, deep fields, and electric energy, served as a fitting stage for closing out the fall.
The women’s squad delivered one of the program’s most balanced national showings in recent years, while the men’s individuals represented GovState with pride in an elite field. From early-season meets in the Midwest to the championship environment in Florida, both teams showed resilience and competitive focus every step of the way.
GovState now turns the page toward winter training and the buildup to track season, carrying confidence from a strong postseason finish and motivation to return even stronger next year.
