Governors State University officially installed Dr. Joyce C. Ester as its seventh president during an investiture ceremony filled with tributes, music, and reflections on legacy and homecoming. University leaders, students, faculty, alumni, and community members gathered to honor Ester’s installation and hear her vision for GovState’s future.
Ester opened her address by calling forward the names of her predecessors. She reflected on the different kinds of support they offered—guidance, wisdom, love, challenge, and encouragement and credited them with helping her stand strong. A poignant moment came when she said: “I even read a poem that I wrote when I was 12 years old that spoke of dreaming of one day becoming a president.”
Centered on human connection, she said, “My goal is to foster community because it is only through authentic relationships will we achieve our goals.” She also acknowledged the financial pressures facing the university: “These are challenging times financially, and it will be my goal to strengthen the economic vitality of this institution.”
Looking ahead, Ester emphasized innovation and institutional growth. She stated, “More work needs to be done to elevate the reputation of the university within the region, within the state, and beyond. True innovation is needed in order for us to grow and evolve as an institution.”
Ester closed her remarks by sharing a personal note on faith and gratitude: “Only a marvelous God can take a little girl from Phoenix and equip her to serve as the seventh president of Governors State University.”
Her words drew a standing ovation as the ceremony concluded with gospel music and celebration.
The investiture marked not just a formal transition of leadership, but a recommitment to the university’s mission of access, equity, and innovation under Ester’s stewardship.
