Governors State University will celebrate the investiture of Dr. Joyce C. Ester as its seventh president on Friday, Nov. 14, at the Center for Performing Arts. The ceremony begins at 10 a.m., followed by a campus luncheon and reception.
Investiture Week at Governors State will feature a series of community-oriented events, including a campus food drive, a spoken-word performance, a veterans’ recognition ceremony, and a Greek Life stroll showcasing student organizations. The festivities highlight the university’s values of inclusion, service, and engagement.
A native of Phoenix, Il., Ester brings more than 30 years of higher education leadership to her new role. She previously served as president of Normandale Community College in Minnesota and Kennedy-King College in Chicago. She earned her bachelor’s degree in sociology from Northern Illinois University and both her master’s and doctorate in education from the University of California, Santa Barbara.
Under Ester’s leadership, Governors State University aims to advance its mission of providing exceptional, accessible, and affordable education while deepening community partnerships and enhancing student success. Her priorities include strengthening enrollment, fostering regional collaboration, and raising the visibility of the university across the Chicago Southland and beyond.
The investiture ceremony represents more than a presidential installation—it symbolizes renewal and collective aspiration. With faculty, students, alumni, local leaders, and community partners in attendance, the event reaffirms GovState’s enduring commitment to equity, excellence, and opportunity.
