LA CROSSE, Wis. — November 5, 2025
The Governors State men’s soccer team saw its postseason run come to a close Wednesday with a 4–2 loss at Viterbo in the CCAC Quarterfinals. Despite the defeat, GovState wrapped up its 2025 campaign with determination and energy, finishing 5–13–1 overall and 4–6–1 in conference play.
The Jaguars opened the match in commanding fashion. Pedro Mendez struck early in the 2nd minute off an assist from Mattia Motzo, then increased the lead just over 15 minutes later with a sharp unassisted finish that put GovState ahead 2–1 heading into halftime. The early pressure and offensive rhythm showed the same resilience that carried the team through late-season victories and a strong push into the playoffs.
Momentum shifted in the second half as Viterbo’s Joaquin Eichhorn completed a hat trick, scoring three unanswered goals between the 68th and 82nd minutes to seal the 4–2 result.
The match became increasingly physical, with GovState finishing the game three men down following a flurry of penalty cards. The Jaguars were shown seven total cards—including two straight reds and multiple yellows—ultimately closing out the match with just eight players on the field. Mendez, Zaid Sibaai, and Tyler Diewert were among those sent off in a heated late stretch.
Despite the challenging finish, GovState’s 2025 season reflected growth, perseverance, and moments of brilliance across a competitive CCAC slate. From tight one-goal matches to key wins down the stretch that secured their playoff berth, the Jaguars demonstrated heart and determination in every outing. The program now turns its focus toward the offseason and the continued development of its returning core.
