Governors State University’s Homecoming Week kicked off in full Jaguar spirit on Thursday, Oct. 30, as students, staff, and alumni packed the Hall of Governors for this year’s pep rally. The event, filled with performances, giveaways, and cheers, set an energetic tone for the weeklong celebration of GovState’s pride.
The pep rally was coordinated by the Office of Student Life and Campus Programs, with support from Delton Pierce, Head of Campus Traditions and Leadership Administrator, who helped lead the event setup and activities. The Governors State University Cheer Team and Dance Company, brought their energy to the stage, filling the hall with excitement and school pride.
Pierce described the event as “an explosion of school spirit, Jaguar pride, and just emphasis on our mascot and what we’re here to do as students—growing different traditions and things that we’re doing here at Governors State that are new to student life.”
Now in his third year leading the pep rally, Pierce said the goal each year is to make it bigger and better. “You can feel the energy in the room being electric,” he said. “People are excited to see what’s happening and to support our student orgs, but also to share in the school spirit experience. Hopefully, we’re looking forward to some winning basketball this season—maybe even conference or nationals.”
The crowd roared as President Dr. Joyce Ester took the stage, offering words of encouragement and unity. She thanked students for their involvement and reminded them that Homecoming is about “celebrating who we are as Jaguars—resilient, creative, and determined.” Her message drew loud applause as she spoke about continuing to build traditions that connect current students with GSU alumni and the surrounding community.
Among those cheering in the crowd was Rebecca Fassbender, who said she “loved the pep rally” and appreciated how it brought the student body together. “It’s so much fun,” she said, smiling between chants and cheers. “Events like this remind us that Governors State University really is one big family.”
The Pep Rally featured introductions from the Student Senate, performances by Jaguar Pride Cheer, the Governors State University Dance Company, and appearances from the Men’s and Women’s Basketball Teams, who received a loud ovation as they were introduced for the upcoming season.
As the pep rally came to a close, the excitement continued into the week’s lineup of events—Comedy Night, Tailgate Day, and the Homecoming Game.
Pierce emphasized that the pep rally is more than a party; it’s about community. “We’re building new traditions here at Governors State ,” he said. “The energy, the pride, and the faces in the crowd—that’s what keeps it going.”
