On Wednesday, Feb. 26, Governors State University welcomed Apna Ghar, a non-profit organization started in 1989 by South Asian women to support survivors of domestic violence.
Madiha Hussaini, Apna Ghar’s operations coordinator, led the presentation which featured free office supplies, an activity about relationships, and a poster board where students could give pass on the best relationship advice that they had ever received.
Hussaini engaged with students, encouraging everyone to participate in some fashion. Apna Ghar encouraged students to answer a questionnaire designed to be able to estimate how ready the participant was to engage in a relationship.
The questionnaire posed a range of questions and issues such as a domestic scenario designed to elicit the participant’s response to their partner’s actions. Afterward, the participant’s responses were given a score that indicated how ready they were and how well they would fare in a relationship.
Hussaini stated that her main objective was, “To just get people thinking outside of the box of what their understanding of a healthy relationship is.”
Apna Ghar will be back on campus on March 26.
