This is a recap of public meetings at Governors State University for September 2024.
The GovState Board of Trustees held Executive Committee Meetings on Sept. 5 and Sept. 13. The agendas indicate that the focus was on the preliminary steps to begin searching for a new president of GovState to replace Cheryl Green. President Green announced her retirement, effective March 2025, shortly before the beginning of the semester.
At the Sept. 13 meeting, a community member and former employee voiced concerns about the campus pool being closed for an extended time.
The next scheduled Board of Trustees meeting is on Oct. 21, and the starting time is not listed on the webpage. This is also a Committee of the Whole meeting. Board of Trustees meetings are held in Engbretson Hall and can be viewed virtually by following a link in the agenda. Another board meeting might be scheduled earlier in October to follow a procedure allowing them to vote on an item later in the month.
The Student Senate held its first open meeting of the Fall 2024 semester on Sept. 12. The Phoenix staff is working on a report about the campus pool, locker rooms, facilities and other concerns voiced by students and athletes during this meeting.

The Student Activities Council (SAC) met on Sept. 19 to brainstorm more ideas to entertain and engage students. The primary focus of this meeting was Homecoming 2024 and Welcome Week for the Spring 2025 semester. SAC is also hosting a National Coming Out Day event on Oct. 11.
Homecoming 2024 is themed Jaguar Palooza. To kick off homecoming week, SAC will host a student and alums talent show on Oct. 27. A meet-and-greet with the participants will follow the talent show. For more homecoming events, visit the SAC calendar.
The next SAC meeting will be held on Oct. 17, at 1:00 PM in room B-1240.
Kaleidoscope Community Service Council met on Sept. 19. Kaleidoscope officers encouraged members to participate in stocking the campus food pantry on the third Thursday of every month from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Kaleidoscope Secretary Chaitanya Kumar Vepareddygari said the pantry stocking is “a lot of fun and a good opportunity to interact and network.”
Kaleidoscope members discussed sponsoring a homecoming event and discussed upcoming Alternative Spring Break information meetings on Oct. 16 and 24 in Engbretson Hall. They also planned for their participation in Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week during the third week of November.
The next Kaleidoscope meeting is scheduled for Oct. 17 at 3 p.m. in B-2215.
