During the first open meeting of the 2024 Fall semester, the Governors State University Student Senate ran out of time to listen to student concerns while navigating a busy agenda.
The primary concern at the Sept. 12 meeting was the athletic facilities. The Senate discussed the future of the pool as one of the significant items on the agenda.
The university pool has been closed for around 18 months. According to sources close to the issue, the main problem with the pool is related to plumbing in the locker rooms, which makes it impossible for swimmers to shower before swimming, among other things. Because of the repairs needed, student-athletes can not use the locker rooms either.
The Senate voted to approve a new senator position. The new senator will represent the GovState Honors College. A need for a senator representing student-athletes also was discussed. The student senate currently has several positions vacant.
The president of the Student Senate, Xavier Thompson, highlighted the new Social Justice building. He reminded the audience that it can be used by students, faculty, staff, and any community members needing free legal help and guidance on addressing issues such as immigration and housing.
Senate Vice President Brett Porter introduced a new student group, the Software Engineer Club. Porter hopes the club will provide more students interested in or pursuing degrees in the field with a fun way to practice coding skills through games and other activities. The Senate voted to approve the club.
Marquis Parks raised the issue that performing arts and dance students don’t have a consistent place to practice, so they must switch from room to room to prepare for their performances. The lack of mirrors and free space makes this situation difficult.
Thompson said he would take the student’s concerns to President Green and the Dean of Students in the coming week.
