Alpha Kappa Alpha’s Upsilon Rho Chapter made history in November, becoming Governors State University’s first sorority, and representation of Greek Life on campus. This chapter now joins a long line of America’s most prestigious, and successful Black Women’s organizations.
Some famous AKAs include Vice President Kamala Harris, and historic figures such as Rosa Parks and Maya Angelou. Among the prestigious artists from the AKAs are Alicia Keys, Phylicia Rashad, and Loretta Divine.
The newest members of the GovState Upsilon Rho chapter are Nichaela Blackhawk Jenkins, a sophomore majoring in Political Science; Latonya Bryant, a freshman majoring in General Studies; Joy Cromwell, a freshman majoring in General Studies; Taylor Fason, a senior majoring in Health Administration; Kaylah Griffin, a sophomore majoring in General Studies; Tia Gunby, a senior majoring in English; Alexis Hamilton, a junior majoring in Social Work; Arvilia Jackson, a junior majoring in Community Health; Imani Jackson, a sophomore majoring in History; Serena Johnson, a sophomore majoring in General Studies; Naomi Lewis, a freshman majoring in General Studies; Janice Taylor-Jackson, a senior majoring in Social Work; and Nicole Thompson, a sophomore majoring in Art.
Most recently the Upsilon Rho Chapter hosted a talk called EKonomics. This talk emphasized the importance of budgeting and creating a successful financial plan for the future. The GovState community can expect more great contributions from the Upsilon Rho Chapter of the AKAs.
