It was a busy week for the Jaguars. The men’s and women’s soccer teams and the volleyball team continued play this week, and they were joined by the GSU men’s and women’s golf teams. 

The week opened with another win by the men’s soccer team as they defeated Roosevelt University 2-0. Goals were scored by Hamzat Sanni and Efrain Davila, while goalkeeper Luis Ramirez secured the shutout with seven saves. The team also shut out Saint Xavier later in the week in a final score of 2-0. Marc Fernandez and Andy Latorre both scored for the Jaguars. 

After the game against Saint Xavier, the team set a school record for most shutouts in a season, boosting their total to four. The team continues to defend its first place standing in the conference. Their record is now  7-2-1 (7-0-1 CACC). 

The women’s soccer team was defeated by Roosevelt 1-0 on March 23. However, the team is still pushing for a place in the conference tournament. The team defeated Saint Xavier 1-0 on March 27, led by Brenna Castillo’s goal and Eden Suda’s 11 saves. The defeat over Saint Xavier puts the team in 7th place, meaning they will be awarded a spot in conference so long as they are successful in their last two games.  

The women’s volleyball team had fire in their bellies this week, securing two straight wins. The team defeated Calumet St. Joseph (25-18, 25-14, 25-23) on March 23 and Saint Ambrose (25-17, 20-25, 25-22,18-25,19-17) on March 25. The team closed their week with a defeat by IU Northwest (19-25, 25-21, 25-22, 25-20). The team’s record is now 5-14 (4-12 CCAC). Although they did not secure a postseason slot, they still have two games to play next week. 

The men’s golf team competed in its first tournament in over a year, opening the season at Olivet Nazarene’s Spring Invitational. The team was led by Casey Domke’s 2-round score of 150 (76, 74). He was followed by Patrick Guilfoyle’s 158, Carter LeRoy’s 171, Akim Bizati’s 179, and Kevin Kompier’s 189. The team placed 6th of six teams. 

The women’s golf team also competed in the Olivet Nazarene Spring Invitational. Although the women do not have enough members to make a team, Sedona Smith and Macie Jansen competed in the 36-hole tournament as individuals. Smith shot a 205 (100, 105) and Jansen followed with 260 (125, 135). The ladies will not compete again until the CACC conference tournament.
