Sports Recap for Feb. 22-28: Basketball teams end season on down note

GSU’s sports teams wrapped up February with both men’s and women’s basketball teams losing in their conference tournaments as both soccer teams opened their seasons.

The men’s basketball team began its CCAC conference tournament play this week with a defeat over Judson University by a final score of 67-60. The team sank an impressive 12 three-pointers. DeAndrey Robinson led the way with 18 points, followed by Payton Harley with 17. Conference tournament play continued for the Jaguars as they took on St. Xavier on Feb. 25. The Jaguars pulled through with an 81-80 overtime win, carried by Harley’s layup with just 1.7 seconds left in overtime play. Harley added an incredible 42 points to the scoreboard that night, setting the school record. Harley was followed by Tariq Deere with 20 points. Robinson also led the team with 11 rebounds. The exciting win carried the Jaguars one game further in tournament play, only to be defeated by first-seed Olivet Nazarene 81-66 on Feb. 27. Lamar Crenshaw, Robinson, and Deere each put up 12 points for GSU, and Crenshaw led the team with five assists. The team wrapped up its season with an 11-11 (7-4) record.  

The fifth-seeded women’s basketball team saw a quick end to their conference tournament play with a 52-42 upset defeat by twelfth-seed IU Northwest on Feb. 23. Tabetha Jones and Sharnita Breeze each had six rebounds for the Jaguars, while Jones contributed 13 points for the team. The loss ended the Lady Jaguars’ season, finishing with an 8-13 (6-4) overall record.  

The women’s soccer team opened its season with a tough 2-0 loss to Trinity International in Wheeling, IL. The women’s opener had been scheduled against Roosevelt University on Feb. 27, but it was postponed.

The men’s soccer team also saw some time on the field this week. GSU lost to Missouri Baptist University by a final score of 4-2. Marc Fernandez and Dylan Swearengen each contributed a goal for the Jaguars. The team’s scheduled competition against Roosevelt University on Feb. 27 was also postponed. Their record is now 0-2 (0-0).  

The women’s volleyball team also saw some action late this week. The team opened its week on Feb. 26 with a loss to Trinity International (25-15, 25-18, 25-11), failing to secure any sets. Ashley Jackson led the way with eight kills, along with Jamie Skvarla with 17 assists. The team took another loss on Feb. 27 to IU Northwest (25-19, 25-13, 23-25, 21-25,15-7), winning two of five sets. GSU’s Ashley Harwood led the way with 12 kills, followed by Jackson, Dunja Tatic, and Ivana Novakovic with 11 kills each. The team’s record now sits at 3-7 (2-5).
