weekly Sports Recap Feb 15 – 21; Two Seasons End and Another Begins for GSU Jaguars
It was the last week for regular season play for men’s and women’s basketball teams, but it was debut week for men’s soccer.
The women’s basketball team opened up their week with a 74-50 win over Holy Cross College on Feb. 15. Leading scorers were Kaitlin Adams with 21, Sharnita Breeze with 18, and Amber Brooks with 17. Brooks also led the team with 10 rebounds. The Jaguars recorded a 55-50 loss to Trinity Cristian College on Feb. 17. despite putting up 17 points in the final quarter. Breeze finished with 13 points, while Brooks recorded a double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds. The Lady Jaguars closed their week with a 61-53 loss to St. Ambrose University. Stand-outs included Tabetha Jones with 20 points, Amber Brooks with nine rebounds, and Sharnita Breeze with six assists. They closed regular season play with a record of 8-12 (6-4).
The men’s basketball team started their week with an 80-57 defeat to Olivet Nazarene on Feb. 15. Payton Harley and Sterling Fields led the team with 12 and 11 points respectively. Glenn Rhone led the team with six rebounds. The Jaguars bounced back with a 79-49 win against Calumet St. Joseph on Feb. 18. DeAndrey Robinson led the team with 19 points and nine rebounds. Glenn Rhone recorded four steals and Gerald Duckworth with nine assists. The Jaguars were defeated by St. Ambrose University on Feb. 20 in a final score of 66-48. Lamar Crenshaw came off the bench to lead the team with 14 points. Glenn Rhone represented the Jaguars with 8 rebounds. They closed regular season play with a record of 9-10 (7-4).
The women’s volleyball team began their week on Feb. 18 with a defeat over Calumet St. Joseph. The team swept all three sets (25-15, 25-7, 25-14). Dunja Tatic and Ivana Novakovic led the way offensively, with 11 and 12 kills respectively. On Feb. 18, the team lost all three sets (25-18,25-14,25-16) in a match against Maryville State University. Madison Wakaliuk represented the Jaguars with nine digs, Jamie Skvarla with 21 assists, and Ashley Jackson and Ivana Novakovic each with eight kills. The team’s record is now 3-4 (2-2).
The men’s soccer team had their season debut against Indiana Institute of Technology on Feb. 19, which took place indoors at GSU’s Sparta Dome. Although the team recorded a 5-0 loss, goalkeeper Luis Ramirez recorded five saves. Martin Esquivel led the team with three shots on goal. The team’s record is 0-1 (0-0).
In other news, the men’s and women’s teams celebrated “Senior Day” on Feb. 20 to recognize the athletes that will be graduating this spring. Graduates on the men’s team include Gerald Duckworth, Lamar Crenshaw, Sterling Fields, DeAndrey Robinson, and Albert Haskins Jr. The Lady Jaguars include Kiya King, Jordan Towery, Kaitlin Adams, Jalyn Foland, Sharnita Breeze, and Amber Brooks.
