Governors State women’s soccer played a two-match road set this week, falling at Saint Xavier before bouncing back with a hard-fought scoreless draw at Indiana Northwest.
On Saturday in Chicago, Saint Xavier struck twice in the opening 17 minutes and added a third after halftime to hand GSU a 3–0 defeat. Despite constant pressure, SXU generated 40 shots with 18 on frame, and goalkeeper Valentina Jimenez turned in a standout performance with 13 saves across 90 minutes. The Cougars scored through Klair Heim (12), Lexi Shreve (17, assist Veronica Davila), and Angelica Flores (54, assist Paige Swaw).
The Jaguars regrouped Tuesday in Hammond and tightened the screws defensively, earning a 0–0 draw at Indiana Northwest for their first clean sheet of the season. Jimenez worked the first half before Hannah Mailander closed it out; the tandem combined for five saves while the back line limited IUNW to five shots on goal (16 total). GSU generated a pair of second-half looks through Ana Rodrigues, but the match stayed level to the final whistle.
GSU moves to 1–3–1 (0–2–1 CCAC) and turns quickly to league play on Friday, Sept. 26, against Calumet (IN) at the Sportsplex in Crown Point, Ind. The kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m. CDT, with live stats available.
