Governors State women’s volleyball strung together its best stretch of the young season, picking up back-to-back sweeps at the Athletics and Recreation Center with decisive wins over Calumet St. Joseph and Mount Mary. The Jaguars (3-13, 2-2 CCAC) leaned on efficient attacking and steady defensive play to push their winning streak to two.
Governors State 3, Calumet St. Joseph 0 (Sept. 16)
GovState wasted little time controlling the match, rolling past the Crimson Wave 25-15, 25-15, 25-16. Junior setter Alexah Martinez directed the offense with 27 assists, spreading the ball to a balanced attack. Joharis Castillo paced the hitters with 10 kills on .474 hitting, while Delia MacDonald added seven kills and three blocks in the middle. Greta Bochert chipped in six kills and Trenyce Bonner added six more with five digs.
The Jaguars finished with a .250 team hitting percentage and won the service game with six aces, highlighted by three from Vanessa Segura. Defensively, GovState held Calumet to a -.011 mark, never allowing the visitors to find rhythm.
Governors State 3, Mount Mary 0 (Sept. 18)
Two nights later, GovState rode the momentum into another sweep, cruising 25-9, 25-18, 25-14 against Mount Mary. The Jaguars’ offense clicked at its highest level of the season, posting a .341 team hitting percentage. Freshman outside hitter Delia MacDonald was nearly unstoppable, finishing with 10 kills on .714 hitting while adding four blocks for a team-high 13 points.
Greta Bochert supplied eight kills and nine digs, while senior right-side Jennifer Barwicka added five kills and four blocks. Castillo delivered seven kills of her own, keeping the defense off balance. Martinez once again set the tone with 11 assists, while libero Alejandra Maldonado steadied the back row with four digs.
The Jaguars’ defense limited Mount Mary to negative hitting in two of the three sets, with the home side out-digging the visitors 33-27 and controlling the net with 10 team blocks.
