Governors State women’s soccer showed flashes of firepower but came up short in a 6–2 loss at Viterbo on Wednesday in La Crosse, Wisconsin.
After the hosts jumped out to a quick 3–0 lead, the Jaguars answered through junior defender Jinni Jimenez, who buried a pair of first-half goals. She struck first in the 19th minute to put GovState on the board, then added her second in the 34th minute off an assist from Carmen Valadez, cutting the deficit to 4–2.
Despite the surge, Viterbo kept pressing and finished with 32 total shots, scoring twice more before halftime and again in the second half. Goalkeepers Valentina Jimenez and Hannah Mailander combined for 10 saves under heavy pressure.
The loss moved GovState to 1–2 overall, while Viterbo improved to 2–1. The Jaguars now turn their attention to their next matchup on Saturday, Sept. 20, at Saint Xavier (IL) with kickoff set for 1 p.m.
