
Governors State University will close its campus on Wednesday, May 14, to honor the life and legacy of Dr. Cheryl F. Green, the university’s sixth president and a transformative leader in higher education. Green passed away on April 23 after a courageous battle with cancer. She retired in March 2025, concluding a tenure marked by visionary leadership and unwavering commitment to student success .
A public celebration of Green’s life will take place at Victory Apostolic Church, located at 20801 Matteson Avenue in Matteson, Illinois. The wake will begin at 10 a.m., followed by a memorial service at noon. Details regarding the repast will be shared at the service.
Green made history in July 2020 as the first Black president of Governors State University. Her tenure was distinguished by numerous initiatives, including the establishment of the Honors College, the College of Graduate Studies, the Latinx Resource Center, and the Illinois Black Hall of Fame. She also spearheaded the creation of a Social Justice Initiative and introduced Greek-lettered organizations to the campus.
Known for her compassion and dedication, Green often went beyond her official duties to support students, sometimes using personal funds to assist those in need. Her leadership not only transformed the university but also left an indelible mark on the broader community.
