April is Arabic Heritage Month, and an embroidery workshop was set up last week with the help of the Office of Institutional Engagement and Excellence and the Student Justice for Palestine club. The club members coordinated it in reflection of introducing more Palestinian awareness and heritage to our campus. Tying into Arabic culture and traditions, the workshop was held Thursday, April 17, from 1:30 to 2:30 pm.
Held in the Lakeside Lounge, in the cafeteria, the tatreez event had Arabic food dishes, such as stuffed grape leaves, and more.
It was filled with rich history and symbolism behind each stitch and the life story of each Palestinian ancestor or relative through the art on the fabric. It is a creative expression that was shared in this event with all those who made it to the workshop. At the end of the event, kits were handed out with tools to make embroidered art together.
