Governors State University men’s volleyball team closed out their inaugural season in dominant fashion, taking down Judson University 3–1 (25-16, 22-25, 25-19, 25-21) on Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Jaguars finish their debut campaign with an impressive 23-6 overall record, an unprecedented achievement for a first-year program.
Led by Pedro Castillo’s monster performance of 21 kills and a .298 hitting percentage, GSU controlled the tempo in key moments, bouncing back from a tight second set loss to claim the third and fourth with poise. Diego Antunez added 12 kills while hitting a stellar .476, and setter Lucas Lapa paced the offense with 38 assists and a service ace.
The Jaguars hit .244 as a team, notching 58 kills and 55 digs while holding Judson to just a .111 hitting percentage on the day. Defensively, Pedro Oliveira and Antunez each chipped in blocks at the net to slow Judson’s attack.
With the regular season complete, Governors State now focuses on the postseason. The Jaguars have received votes in every NAIA Top 15 Coaches Poll and were ranked #17 in the final week. Only 12 teams will be selected for the NAIA Men’s Volleyball National Tournament, and GovState hopes its standout first-year resume is strong enough to earn it a spot among the nation’s best.
Regardless of postseason fate, this team has made history, setting a high bar for the program’s future with a remarkable first season of competitive play.
