The Advocating for Sexual Assault Prevention (ASAP) team at Governors State University is holding several events on campus to mark Sexual Assault Awareness Month in April.
Among the events were the clothesline t-shirt-making event and a panel discussion during the first week of April. The clothesline project display and an ASAP resource table will remain in the D Main Atrium and B Wing Showcase all month long.
There will also be a donuts and denim event on Wednesday, April 30, from 1 to 5 p.m. in the Hall of Governors. There is also Wear Teall on Tuesdays (in support of Sexual Assault Awareness Month) on campus this whole month, it’s
encouraged to post your fashion inspiration in support of those who’ve experienced any form of sexual harassment, assault, or abuse by posting about your fit with the hashtag #SAAM2025.
The ‘Panel Discussion In Honor of SAAM’ (sexual assault awareness month), was held in Engbretson Hall on April 1, from 2:3 to 3:30 p.m. Pizza was provided for attendees who wanted to learn and advocate about how to stay aware around the critical topic of sexual assault and violence. Common myths of sexual assault and violence were discussed, and how to be there for someone who may choose to open up about it with you.
Ways that one can be of help to others or oneself who have experienced violence, harassment, or sexual abuse of any shape or form, can include confiding in a safe person, or being that safe person for someone else. This can be listening not to fix but listening wholeheartedly and sitting with them as they share their experiences and feelings, even if that means not saying much. Tell them you believe them, and be a sense of comfort to them by giving them space to be themselves and being vulnerable with you in sharing their experience(s).
