On Monday, March 10, Governors State University (GSU) students gathered for an informative and interactive Alcohol Awareness Workshop hosted by the Counseling and Wellness Center in collaboration with Advocate Aurora Health. The workshop, held in the Hall of Governors from 1 to 3 p.m., aimed to educate attendees about the physical and mental effects of alcohol consumption while providing useful strategies for making healthier decisions.
The session featured a several presenters, including Advocate Aurora nurse Cassandra Brooks and medical assistant Angelie Purifoy, who shared their expertise on the health impacts of alcohol. Director of Counseling and Wellness, Dr. Kim Major-Ford, also contributed valuable insights into making healthier life choices. Operations Specialist Sabrina Roseborough brought some fun into the mix by leading a lively Kahoot game, further engaging the audience and reinforcing key points from the session.
The workshop was thoughtfully structured, with expert speakers explaining the negative health impacts of alcohol. Through a well-organized PowerPoint presentation, participants learned how alcohol addiction can damage various parts of the body, including the brain. The presenters clarified any doubts or questions from the audience, making complex medical concepts easily understandable.
The event wasn’t just about lectures; attendees also participated in interactive games that added excitement to the afternoon. The best part was the chance to win prizes, and refreshments were provided, ensuring everyone felt comfortable and energized while participating in the session. The event offered something for everyone—whether you were there to gain valuable knowledge or simply enjoy the atmosphere, it was an enjoyable and informative experience.
Students left the workshop with a greater understanding of the risks associated with alcohol consumption, as well as practical tips for making healthier choices. It was a successful and engaging event that combined education, interaction, and a fun experience, helping to foster a positive environment at GSU.
