A group of Governors State University students spent a transformative Alternative Spring Break (ASB) in New Orleans, where they dedicated their spring break to community service and civic engagement. From March 17 to March 21, the students participated in various projects aimed at supporting local communities and promoting positive change.
Throughout the trip, students worked alongside local organizations on initiatives such as rebuilding homes, supporting food banks, and engaging in environmental sustainability efforts. These projects allowed them to contribute directly to the city’s recovery and ongoing development, offering valuable assistance to families and communities in need.
In addition to their service work, students had the opportunity to experience the unique culture and history of New Orleans. They engaged with local residents, learning about the city’s resilience and the challenges it continues to face. One student shared how impactful it was to see firsthand the strength and determination of the community, noting, “It was humbling to witness how much the people of New Orleans have endured, and yet, they continue to thrive and support one another.”
The trip was not only about volunteering; it was also about personal growth and development. Students strengthened their leadership and teamwork skills while building lasting relationships with fellow volunteers and community members. The hands-on experience of working in diverse environments and tackling real-world challenges left many participants with a deeper understanding of the importance of service and civic responsibility.
For these GovState students, this spring break was a powerful reminder that giving back can be one of the most rewarding experiences. As they return to campus, they carry with them not just memories but a renewed sense of purpose and a commitment to making a positive impact in their communities.
