In a game that will be remembered for generations to come, the Governors State University women’s basketball team defeated St. Francis (IL), 70-64, to secure their first-ever Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference championship on March 3.
Despite a challenging start, the Jaguars showed incredible resilience, especially in the second quarter, where they surged ahead with a dominant 22-point effort. With the game tied at 15 after the first quarter, GovState found their rhythm, outscoring St. Francis in each subsequent quarter. Their defense and rebounding were key in keeping St. Francis from mounting any significant runs in the second half.
Le’lani Harris led the way for the Jaguars, delivering an all-around performance with 28 points, 10 rebounds, and a perfect 9-of-9 from the free-throw line. Harris’s free-throw shooting demonstrated her poise under pressure and contributed significantly to the team’s success. Symone Harrell also played a pivotal role, putting up 20 points and seven rebounds, while Tykara Harrison’s 15 points kept the offense flowing smoothly throughout the game.
St. Francis fought hard, with Zareia Chevre’s dominant 38-point effort leading the charge. However, the Jaguars’ defensive presence, led by players like Symone Harrell and Kalvina Eubanks, kept the Saints’ offense in check when it mattered most. The Saints’ shooting struggles from beyond the arc—just 6-of-23 from three-point range—allowed GovState to maintain control and seal the win.
The game’s significance extends beyond just the championship itself. This win not only showcases the Jaguars’ resilience but also marks a turning point in their basketball program. A team that has long been on the rise, they now have a championship title to cement their place in school history. This victory is the culmination of years of hard work, determination, and teamwork, and it sets a new standard for future seasons.
Coach Tonishea Mack’s strategy throughout the game was evident in how well the team adapted, particularly in their offensive and defensive adjustments after the first quarter. The Jaguars played with a sense of urgency and unity that powered them through the tight moments and helped them secure the win.
