As Governors State University prepares to host its 10th annual TAPS Dance Concert, students and faculty alike are looking forward to “DREAM,” an inspiring production that blends artistry with social reflection.
Presented by GovState Theatre and Performance Studies and featuring the GovState Dance Company, “DREAM” is a powerful exploration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech and its enduring relevance in today’s world.
Megan Lindsay, the artistic director and faculty choreographer for “DREAM,” has been a vital force in the GSU dance community since joining the Theatre and Performance Studies faculty in 2013. As the coordinator and director of the TAPS Spring Dance Concert, she also serves as the faculty advisor of the GSU Dance Company.
Lindsay’s background in dance is extensive. She graduated cum laude from Ball State University with a B.S. in Dance Performance and earned her M.A. in Dance/Movement Therapy from Columbia College Chicago. Over the years, she has expanded GSU’s dance program, co-creating the dance minor in 2019 and teaching a variety of courses, including Jazz, Modern, Tap, Ballet, and Choreography. This fall, she looks forward to offering new courses such as Intro to Choreography and Intro to Turns and Leaps.
Lindsay describes “DREAM” as an evening that invites audiences to reflect on the lasting impact of King’s message.
“This performance considers both the progress we’ve made as a society and the work that remains. Each choreographer offers a personal interpretation of their dreams and visions for humanity and the world,” Lindsay said.
With 10 different choreographers—featuring one faculty member, two GSU alumni, and seven student choreographers—the production showcases a diverse range of themes, including:
- Black history as visual storytelling
- The role of church and spirituality in marginalized communities
- Healing and building compassionate communities
- Personal growth and learning from past mistakes
- Mental health in an overstimulating world
- The contrast between dreams and nightmares in relationships
- Envisioning a better future despite obstacles
Audiences can expect a dynamic mix of dance styles, including jazz, modern, contemporary, liturgical, hip-hop, and African dance.
The GovState Dance Company: A platform for artistic expression
Founded in 2014 by Lindsay, the GSU Dance Company serves as the university’s only in-house performing arts organization. In 2016, it became an official student organization, offering students opportunities to train, create, and perform dance and theatre works throughout the year.
The company performs at various events both on- and off-campus, with the Spring Dance Concert being a major highlight. As an inclusive community, the company welcomes dancers of all levels and backgrounds. Formal auditions are held each fall, but informal auditions can be arranged by appointment with Lindsay.
“The goal is to provide students with the opportunity to engage in as many campus events as possible, spreading awareness of the dance company while collaborating with other clubs,” Lindsay said.
Rehearsals for “DREAM” began last September, with students dedicating four nights a week to perfecting their performances throughout the fall and spring semesters.
“Our process is deeply collaborative,” Lindsay noted. “Choreographers, dancers, and faculty work together to bring these pieces to life. Every dance tells a story, and each performer adds their unique perspective and energy to the stage.”
