Governors State University (GSU) students revived Swami Vivekananda’s iconic address first delivered on Sep. 11, 1893, at the Art Institute of Chicago’s University Partner Fest on Feb.15.
The presentation, part of Jitish Kallat’s “Public Notice 3” installation, took place on the iconic Women’s Board Grand Staircase. Led by Professor Woodman Taylor, participants from GSU’s International Culture Organization and Indian Club recited Vivekananda’s words, emphasizing themes of religious tolerance and universal acceptance.
Chaitanya Kumar Vepareddygari, portraying Vivekananda, began the recitation with the iconic words: “Sisters and Brothers of America.” He delivered the speech, and the team continued, with each member taking turns to bring Vivekananda’s message to life. Taylor gave a thank-you note at the end of the recitation, expressing gratitude to the participants and the audience for their involvement and support.
Event highlights included Art Talks, where participants led discussions on various artworks, Attendees also benefited from a Career Panel, gaining valuable insights into museum career opportunities from industry professionals. Faculty members conducted interactive Gallery Activations, bringing art to life through hands-on experiences. The event included Art-Making Activities, allowing everyone to express their creativity and foster a deeper connection with the artistic process.
Dr. Joi Patterson, Chief Diversity Officer; Dr. Lara Hrycaj, assistant professor of Media Studies; Dr. Jan Figa, Director of Library Services; Alexis Robinson, International Student Advisor; and Xiaobo She, professor of Mathematics, were among those who attended and expressed their support.
This event was an example of the enriching opportunities that all GSU students have access to, offering both cultural insight and a chance for personal growth. The day concluded with a networking reception, where students and faculty connected with museum staff and intern alumni, opening doors for future collaborations and opportunities.
