As the crisp air of November settles over Governors State University (GSU), students, faculty, and staff gathered to celebrate a cherished tradition: the annual Thanksgiving Holiday Meal Distribution on Nov. 25. The event, a beacon of community spirit and gratitude, is more than just a chance to distribute meals—it is an opportunity to share kindness and support among the GSU family and surrounding communities.
This year, the event was held at the university’s main entrance, which was transformed into a festive hub of warmth and giving. Tables laden with crates of food lined the area. Volunteers buzzed with energy, preparing to welcome hundreds of participants.
The distribution’s success relied on the GSU community’s collective effort. Students from various clubs, including the Center for Student Engagement and Intercultural Programs, worked alongside faculty and staff to organize the event.
“We want to do something good for our community and make sure students, faculty, and staff with other members of the community at large can be a part of,” said Delton Pierce, assistant director, Campus Traditions and Leadership. “We’re providing those in need with an opportunity to get what they need to have a hot meal over the holidays if nothing else”
Among the attendees was Aakiyah Smith, a freshman. She came not knowing exactly what to expect but was relieved she did. “This is something nice to do for the students,” she said. “They do a lot of gatherings like this I noticed but I’ve never seen a school do this though,”
As the event unfolded, laughter and conversations filled the air. Boxes of food were handed out with smiles and heartfelt wishes for a happy holiday. Volunteers ensured every box was thoughtfully packed making sure almost everyone left with something in an organized manner.
The event concluded with a group photo in front of the massive Governors State University banner, It was a fitting end to a day that exemplified the university’s mission to foster unity and compassion.
