In a thrilling postseason semifinal match, the Governors State men’s soccer team claimed a 2-1 victory over Olivet Nazarene to secure their place in the CCAC Championship game.
Both teams remained scoreless through a competitive first half, but the Jaguars found their momentum in the second, with critical goals from John Gonzalez and Horace Spence sealing the win.
The breakthrough came in the 59th minute when Gonzalez scored off an assist from Andrea Croce, putting GovState on the board. Then, in the 72nd minute, Horace Spence extended the lead with an unassisted goal, giving the team a 2-0 advantage. Despite a late goal by Olivet Nazarene’s Mounir Azzam in the 82nd minute, Governors State held firm to secure the victory.
Goalkeeper Marcal Salom Chandre was outstanding throughout the match. He faced multiple shots and made crucial saves to keep Olivet Nazarene at bay. His poise under pressure and command of the defense were instrumental in preserving the lead and ultimately securing the win for Governors State.
This hard-earned victory brings Governors State one step closer to their season goal as they prepare for the CCAC Post-Season Championship game. They will face Trinity Christian on Thursday, Nov. 14, at the Sportsplex in Crown Point, Indiana.
